The republication of the small volume Uomini Illustri di Costigliole Saluzzo, written by Mòsele in 1933 and reproduced here in facsimile, is the starting point for exploring the stories of people and families only hinted at there, and for adding new figures who left their mark and memory in the community of Costigliole. From the Costanzia family in the early Middle Ages, to the Crotti who in 1618 succeeded the old lords as the new “Dominus loci”, to the Carbonari fighters of 1821 and the Risorgimento, men of Costigliole have fought to defend their community and to build Italy, often at the cost of their lives. Never more than in these cases, and in these times, is “historia magistra vitae”.

Diary No. 2 by Vincenzo Calzia, a typescript deposited at the Historical Institute of the Resistance in Imperia a year before his death and discovered in 2023, tells the local, national and international story of the Second World War and the Resistance from 1940 to 1945, seen by the author as a municipal secretary in western Liguria. An important testimony, fresh, direct, even critical, close to reality, which in a dry, simple style helps us understand the hard, tragic trial that farmers, workers and housewives faced, risking their own lives and those of their families. The diary also reveals a culture ranging from history to literature, poetry, music and religion.

Partly unpublished papers make it possible to reconstruct with good reliability the controversial question of relations between the Ligurian Resistance and the Allies. The Allied missions were certainly a formal recognition of the partisan movement, but in their ambiguous folds they concealed a precise investigative task: to gather first-hand information on the enemy, assess the strength and armament of the forces “acting in a spirit of collaboration”, verify the legitimacy of their repeated requests for military supplies, profile the commanders and define their political leanings. The partisan commands replied by sending their own missions the other way, to supply “apprentices” to the Allied services and bring up-to-date information; suspected of harbouring infiltrated agents, they were at first received with extreme mistrust on landing in France.

Don Giacomo Bonavia is the parish priest of Villanova d’Albenga, a few kilometres from the coast of western Liguria. He is a “rebel” in the name of freedom: he loathes all violence and refuses to use weapons. It is the Second World War, and Fascists and Germans are sowing hatred and blood. Don Bonavia becomes a mediator to obtain the release of a Todt official in exchange for two partisan prisoners: a difficult, dangerous undertaking that ends in the betrayal of a supposed resister and the priest’s arrest. In the “house of terror” at Albenga he is interrogated and tortured for twenty days. A woman, Maria, tries to help him, but events are not on his side. So many “rebel” priests on either side of the barricade, some with the partisans and some with the Fascists. From Liguria to Piedmont, a Resistance made also of fierce oppositions, which Daniele La Corte’s work brings back to light in all its dramatic reality.

With a very attentive eye, the two clergymen scrutinised the “Land of Jesus” to understand better the roots of the faith. At the same time, in the various writings they devoted to the Holy Land, they poured out the intense moments lived on the roads of the Levant, leaving us a valuable record of the changes that accompanied Italian pilgrimages to the East.

Matteo Olivero (Acceglio 1879 – Saluzzo 1932) worked in Paris, Turin, Genoa, Cuneo and Saluzzo, his adopted town and home of the art gallery that bears his name, with a preference for the valleys of Monviso. Over the years and by degrees, the painter layered his gaze on nature, exploring the suggestion of space. Among the places of his soul stands out Paesana, with his stays in the early 1920s under the protection of the paper industrialist Luigi Burgo. The self-portraits and the masterpiece L’Attesa (Waiting), which portrays his mother Lucia near the parish church of Calcinere, fit into the frame of waters flowing in a silence inhabited by a thousand shades of green. Effects of light and snow in alpine solitude document how deeply Olivero absorbed Divisionism, the technique of Giovanni Segantini and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, as the signature of a visual journey.

A historical account in diary form which, starting well before 1824, reconstructs the story of the Agnesi family and the rise of the prestigious pasta brand found on tables the world over. It is a chance to talk about a family and a factory, about the art of the “fidelari”, the Genoese pasta-makers of most ancient memory, and about the workers who contributed to the company’s rise and fortune, up to the 1990s, when the Agnesi family lost control of the company. Completed by a rich set of photographs, postcards and advertising leaflets, many of them produced by Studio Testa.

The book tells the legionaries’ story through unpublished documents and photographs found in Italian and Spanish archives. The voices of men, women and children emerge from hundreds of letters sent to Franco by the fighters and their families, pages that reveal the motives, dreams and miseries of the Duce’s Italy. The personal papers of the military chaplain Pietro da Varzi, responsible for burying and commemorating the Italian dead in Spain, also bring to light the traces of a geography of mourning now almost vanished: an uncomfortable legacy in marble that both republican Italy and post-war Francoist Spain sought to forget.

He teaches first at Brondello and then, once married to Angela Calligaris, at Venasca. Years both beautiful and hard, with poverty as his constant companion.

Both are at the PAS in Saluzzo, the First Reception for Seasonal Workers, an institutional response for housing some of the African migrants who every spring flock to the small town of Saluzzo to pick apricots, peaches, apples, pears, blueberries, plums and kiwis in Italy’s second fruit-growing district. Silvio Bonfante, born in 1921, bound his life to the partisan struggle, lived entirely in western Liguria and lower Piedmont. Battle name: Cion, the Nail. He led the Volante, the rebel squad devoted to lightning raids and expert in hit-and-run guerrilla warfare. He was the man the Germans and the Fascists could not catch: a nightmare for the enemy and a beacon for a people oppressed by dictatorship. In a short time Cion became the heir of U Megu, the great commander Felice Cascione. But he was much more besides: the seminarian who left the path of holy orders without ever straying from the Faith or from the upright example of many churchmen; the worker at the Agnesi factory who would never forget the sacrifice hidden behind every hour of hard labour. He died in October 1944, little more than a boy.

The arrival of the fortnightly deeply marked the news scene in the Saluzzo area and introduced a new journalistic style that spared no one and presented the facts without fear or deference. This volume is a collection of articles and pieces spanning ten years, from 1979 to 1988, and its title, When Saluzzo Dreamed of Oil, comes from one of the seven April Fools’ jokes that made the people of Saluzzo smile. It is the fruit of the patient work of Gigi Ferraro, who leafed through the paper’s back numbers choosing subjects that can still interest, or simply intrigue, today.

Tavio Cosio tells of his valleys and dreams of the distant roots of their people in his Piedmontese speech, “mesa vitona” as he called it, letting the narrative flow as the emotion “dictates within”, without worrying about choosing consistently between Piedmontese and Occitan. These closely linked stories together offer the picture of a western alpine valley in the passage from the Neolithic to the age of metals: an ideal middle valley, with the features that could be found in much of the Piedmontese and Occitan “Granda”, described with vivid imagination but always in the light of deep documentation.
